Rachael and Kevin are relatively new to Portland so when we started talking about engagement photos they asked if I’d throw out a few location suggestions. They were quite taken with the idea of shooting at Powell’s Bookstore and the Broadway Bridge. I’ve shot in both locations a number of times now, and although Powell’s is a ridiculously cool bookstore it for the most part honestly has pretty atrocious lighting. But if you know where to look there are a few sweet spots in the building where the windows cast the most beautifully soft light on the aisles that is great for portraits. As for the Broadway Bridge, it has always been one of my favorite places to shoot. It not only has excellent lines and shapes to play with but at sunset it looks absolutely gorgeous.

So far Rachael and Kevin’s engagement session is one of my favorites this year, especially because both of them were a joy to work with. In general, I had to give them very little direction because they acted so naturally and comfortably in front of the camera, which always makes my job a little bit easier. They were clearly very much in love. I’m really looking forward to taking more photos of them in August during their wedding at the Seattle Tennis Club.

Wedding party photo McMenamins Edgefield

McMenamins Edgefield wedding photographers love photographing wedding parties here!

The wedding photos in today’s blog post are the culmination of a love story long in the making, which began when Gabriela moved to New Mexico in the 5th grade and met Ben for the first time. Quickly smitten with Gabriela, Ben, along with his friends, used to follow Gabriela home from school and try to convince her to go out with him, After much persistence he was eventually successful when the two of them began dating their freshman year in high school. Since then they’ve been inseparable.

Aside from getting to spend the day with this lovely couple, my favorite part of their wedding was photographing a very special event during the reception. Ben’s parents led the newlyweds and all of their guests in the New Mexican tradition of La Marcha, a mini parade of sorts, around the meadow next to Blackberry Hall at McMenamin’s Edgefield. At the end of the march, the guests formed a giant tunnel that Ben and Gabriela ran through while everyone cheered and smiled. It was so much fun that quite frankly I think Oregonians should start making it a tradition at every wedding!

Let me first start by saying that I love outdoor weddings, and I especially love beach weddings. There are few things I can think of that are more romantic than getting married with waves crashing nearby on a warm, sunny day. So I was very excited for Emily and Mick’s wedding. It was held at Cannon Beach with Haystack Rock just a stone’s throw away, while their reception was held in a little meadow surrounded by trees and flowers behind a cute little house at Haystack Gardens a couple blocks down the road. One of the great things about their wedding is that they had the most wonderful decorations, and they made them entirely on their own. I can only imagine all of the time that went into them, but they did a wonderful job.

I also had a great time hanging out with the two of them after the wedding when I was off the clock. Mick was so kind as to treat me to a couple shots of whisky and we chatted about photography for a bit. This highlights one of the uniquely special things about my job. By nature, wedding photographers get to spend more time with the newlyweds than any other vendor, and because of that we have the opportunity to form a deep connection, if only for the day. I believe that every photographer should have this goal because it ultimately will produce better photographs, and it just makes the job so much more fun. In a way, being asked to join in is a sign of a job well done. It’s always a welcomed surprise and an honor because it truly shows their appreciation for the effort put into their wedding photographs.

Emily already wrote to us and said:
Hey Kyle,
I wanted to tell you thank you for everything you did at the wedding – you did an amazing job, and you were very patient with us, haha. We’re sooo happy we chose to go with you… Wow is all I can say. They are AMAZING. You have some serious talent. Thank you SO much, again!

Stefanie and Hoss are “boat people.”  It was so fun to be their wedding photographer!

Here are some things I loved most from their wedding:

  • I loved the classic, care-free American feel to their yacht club wedding.
  • Stefanie hand made most of the decorations.
  • They not only had a catered meal they also brought in a wood-fired pizza truck.
  • The evening was complete with the gift of an engraved bell for their boat.

I loved Jade and Cory’s small, intimate wedding. When we sat down for the first time to talk about their day, they described how they wanted to have a quaint vintage wedding with only their best friends and closest family. With less than 20 guests this was sure to be one of the smallest weddings I’ve ever had the chance to photograph!

Jade and Cory were married in the Historic Old Church here in Portland which has been here since 1882. It’s a beautiful building with an immense history. Xtabay Vintage provided Jade’s beautiful vintage 1950’s wedding dress, and her wonderful headpiece she made herself! After the wedding, we followed up with a quaint dinner reception at Mother’s Bistro.

Weddings such as Jade and Cory’s remind me just how important our friends and family are. Jade and Cory are such genuine people, they didn’t need an enormous venue, DJ, catering, hundreds of people, just the company of friends and family, to make for a wonderful, and memorable wedding day.

Grace Shibley Wedding Photos

A few years ago, I was asked by designer Fuchsia Lin to photograph a series of amazing dresses she’d completed.  Fuchsia asked Oregon Ballet Theater dancer Grace Shibley to model for us, and we had a great time working together.  Not only is Grace a beautiful young lady, and an amazing dancer, but she truly is a delight to work with.  She does her name justice.

Fast forward to six weeks ago, when I was contacted by Katy Haley, of Bridal Bliss, asking if I’d like to photograph Grace’s wedding.  Of course, I said yes.  I couldn’t have been more excited.

Grace and Paul are one of those couples that you can tell, just from a few minutes with them, how much they enjoy each other’s company.  Whether they’re perusing paintings in the Portland Art Museum, or planning a wedding, or making goofy faces, it’s obvious how much fun they have together.  So it was especially enjoyable to celebrate their marriage together with them, and to photograph it!

Grace’s bridesmaids were her childhood friends–they’ve known each other since kindergarten.  They made a ride in the double decker bus into a serious dance party.

What could be more appropriate than to photograph a ballerina next to a  Degas painting?  Paul arranged to have their first look in the Portland Art Museum, in the Mark building, named after his grandparents.  We spent some time photographing them along with some of the artwork his grandparents have donated to the museum over the years, including this Severin Roesen, below. Talk about goofy.  As we were photographing the wedding party outside of the Portland Art Museum, I noticed a gentleman standing nearby, holding a clown wig.  We asked to borrow it, and he agreed.  And Paul made pretty good use of it. Trinity Episcopal Portland Wedding

Trinity Episcopal Cathedral is, without a doubt, one of the most beautiful old buildings in Portland, inside and out.  Grace and Paul asked if we could re-create their engagement photo, at the steps of one of the amazing red doors.  Portland Trinity Episcopal Wedding Photo

After the ceremony and reception at Trinity, the wedding party gathered at Zupan’s Cellar for an intimate dinner.  Decorated it as if it were a summer garden party, it truly was the perfect finish to a beautiful day, surrounded by friends and family.

Grace and Paul, it’s been an absolute delight and honor to tell your wedding story.  Thank you, and congratulations!

Lauren and Rob’s wedding at the Resort at the Mountain was a real delight to photograph–in spite of the rain!  They make the kind of couple that you enjoy watching, because it’s obvious how much they like each other.  They’re constantly smiling at each other, making goofy faces, or nuzzling nozes.  It’s adorable.  Look for it in the following photographs….

The Mt Hood Oregon Resort (formerly Resort at the Mountain) is beautiful whether it’s sunny, raining, or snowing.  From the spa to the gazebo to the ballroom, we were able to create some lovely portraits of these two.  It was also a lot of fun to capture their family interacting and dancing.  (Don’t miss the photo of the guy catching a candy-coated almond in his mouth.)  Plus, Rob and Lauren are two of the friendliest people you’ll meet, and they made everyone feel warmly welcomed.

Rob and Lauren, congratulations!

From the moment I met them, I liked them.  I laughed so hard when we talked that I could hardly converse!

Ryan is half-way through med school in Cali and will make an excellent pediatrician.  Brianna, a perfect match, is an active nurse and balances out his orneryness with her bubbly laugh and beautiful eyes. When they are together, you’re just swept into the smiles, I swear they’re contagious.

Aside from a stunning wedding venue in Vancouver, Washington, that looked straight out of England, I was delighted with the details. You can see Brianna’s handiwork everywhere you turn. From the hanging crystal canopy to the Bureau of Standards Big Band kicking out the dance tunes.  Amazing night.  She looked like a queen thanks to stylist Caprice Hammon and Bridal Exclusives with stunning gown from Allure.

I will remember the way Ryan’s eyes overflowed as Brianna walked down the aisle, the way her Dad gave her one last kiss as he gave her away, the tearful toasts and the abundant laughter. Thank you Ryan and Brianna for including me on this once-in-a-lifetime event.

I don’t know if you’ll believe me when I say this, but the above photo was taken in March.  In Oregon.  Notice that bright yellow stuff coming out of the sky?  You don’t usually see that in March.  In Oregon.  Notice the beautiful bride in her sleeveless gown, outside, in March, in Oregon?  You don’t usually see that either.

I first met Betsy several years ago, when she asked me to take some portraits of her.  It was probably in March, because we photographed in a local park, taking shelter under a tree during downpours, and photographing during the breaks.  Since then, we’ve taken several portraits of her with her children–on sunnier, warmer, summer days.

The past fall, I was very happy to hear that Betsy was getting married to this great guy, Roger.  And even happier to hear that we were going to be photographing their wedding.  And what a wedding it was!

Held at Zenith Vineyard, we arrived on a sunny, 75-degree day at the end of March.  Zenith Vineyard is a gorgeous wedding venue, made even more beautiful by the spring blossoms on the trees.  Add in Betsy and Roger and their great friends and family, and it really was an amazing day.

Our PhotoBooth was a big hit at the wedding–starting with Betsy’s son and daughter, Sean and Erin.

Photographing model portfolio test shoots is a lot of fun.  In Portland, there are several great modeling agencies, including Muse Models, Sports and Lifestyle Unlimited, Q6, Ryan Artists, and Option Model Management.  I’ve photographed portfolios for models that work with all of these modeling agencies, and more.  Sometimes models need some fresh new looks for their modeling portfolios, and sometimes they’re just getting started in the modeling industry, and need some test shoots in order to build a new portfolio to show to modeling agencies.  Whatever the model’s aims, having professional photos to showcase their talents helps models and actors get noticed, get work, and get paid.

It’s also a lot of fun for us at the studio to see where models and actors that we helped get started, end up.  We’ve photographed models and actors that went on to act on shows such as Leverage, Grimm, and Portlandia.  Others have moved to LA and New York and have vibrant careers in the modeling and acting industry.  Sometimes I’ll see them in fashion spreads and advertisements in magazines.  Sometimes we see them in commercials for great companies like Adidas or Nike.

This week we’ve photographed a couple of beautiful aspiring models, and I can tell they’re going places.  Today we’ll feature Ellie McClaskey.  Ellie is a vibrant, funny, energetic young lady.  She plays all kinds of sports, and is a lot of fun to have in front of the camera!  She has a range that will help her do well in both lifestyle and sports modeling, which is great because she’s now represented by Sports and Lifestyle Unlimited!

When you are ready to jumpstart your modeling or acting career, and need a great portfolio to show to modeling and acting agencies, contact us!  (Visit our website to see more of our Portland model portfolio photography.)  We’d love to photograph a stunning modeling portfolio that will get you noticed!

We were honored recently with another award from the International Society of Professional Wedding Photographers. This image, which Kyle took at Kendal and Eric’s wedding in October, at Camp Colton, won an award in the Bridal Party category.

This is the 9th award we’ve won from the ISPWP in the past 6 years. The caliber of photographers elected to the ISPWP is amazing, so it’s always an honor to have our images featured on their site and awarded in their competition!

Oregon Wedding PhotographersI love it when my brides become friends; such was the case with Jennifer. Through capturing her engagement and wedding photos our hearts knit together and we both did a happy dance when her wedding was selected for publication in A Paper Proposal.

Michael and Jen were wed in the heart of Medford Oregon, on an idyllic lake surrounded by the rugged Oregon Pass. Their love was tangible–both were glowing with the happiness of finally belonging to the other.  As Michael brushed her cheek with his hand and held her close, Jen looked at me as if to say, “This is Heaven….”  I couldn’t agree more.
