This was a very special wedding for Matt and Dominique. It took place at Camp Angelos out in Corbett, a beautiful space with open fields, cabins, lots of woods, and the Sandy River running along the edge. Matt and Dominique have been involved with the Camp since it was first founded, helping build trails with family and friends from when they were children.

It was wonderful to see Matt and Dominique so in love with each other, and when you include great food, good friends, loving family, and a beautiful location, it’s just a winning combination for a wedding!  (Plus, look for the photo of their custom Saucesome below!  A great party favor….)

This wedding was Melisa’s woodland vision come to life. Nestled in the backyard, surrounded by closest friends and family, Melisa and Justin pronounced, “For as long as we both shall live, or until the Zombie Apocolypse.”  Laughter rippled through the crowd as the couple shared hugs and smiles among their guests.

As the evening wore on, August sunset set the stage for some romantic portraits along the bark-chip path leading to the backyard. There’s nothing like being wrapped in the arms of your beloved, just taking a second to embrace the moment. We completed the evening with sparklers on the front lawn, and lots of laughter as we perfected the shot.

This day would not have been possible without the help of some wonderful Portland vendors– specifically coordinator extraordinaire Natalia from Bridal Bliss, Vicki at Two Chicks and a Rooster Catering,  and Lora from Sophisticated Floral Designs.  Their contributions helped make Justin and Melisa’s dream wedding a reality.

Many thanks and congratulations to a visionary couple and their deep love and friendship for each other!

Seattle Wedding Photography FritzPhoto

Earlier this year, I shot Rachael and Kevin’s engagement session at Powell’s Books and at the Broadway Bridge. We had such a good time and the photos turned out so well that I was eagerly anticipating their wedding at the Seattle Tennis Club. We started the day at the beautiful Pan Pacific Hotel in downtown Seattle where we took photos on the balcony encircled by flowers and then the spiral staircase with wood-grain walls, marble steps and glass railings. Afterward we segued over to the tennis club and took goofy bridal party photos on the courts and dramatic portraits of Rachael and Kevin on the docks. The newlyweds were married on a grassy bank surrounded by a white fence and roses beyond which sailboats coasted the gentle blue waves of Lake Washington as the evening sun set behind the nearby hills. It couldn’t have been more idyllic. It was a truly beautiful wedding for a wonderful couple. Congratulations to Rachael and Kevin! The day started with a patched up boutonniere (go Susan!) and a much needed handkerchief.  Steve wiped away the happy tears spilling down Maryanne’s cheeks as they clasped hands during their first look. Their 3 year engagement was finally over.  The fountain hushed the background noise as Steve held her in his arms.  Maryanne’s rich Italian heritage was beautifully evident as family gathered round, sharing kisses and tears alike.

Surrounded by family and intimate friends, they said their vows atop the 30th floor in the iconic Portland City Grill. It was like stepping into an Italian family reunion: Uncle John “Big John” nicknamed me “Philly” in his New York accent, joking about my east-coast relatives and insisting that I was now “one of the family”.

Toasts, laughter and clinking glasses (you know what that means) filled the room as the united couple greeted their guests.

After dinner we captured a few minutes of evening light at street level, Maryanne emanating effortless glamour. I loved watching them together; they moved and thought in sync. This was never more evident than in their spectacular first dance. The guests erupted into cheers as they concluded, an incredible display of ballroom to swing-aerials and back.

This wedding was a stunning combination of glamour and heart-warming love. Such a beautiful reflection of this amazing couple. Congratulations Steve + Maryanne!

Youngberg Hill Vineyard Wedding

While shooting Beth and Tom’s wedding I learned that a good deal of their courtship was spent long distance, which made this wedding particularly special because you could tell how excited they were to move their relationship to the next level. Having been in a long-distance relationship myself in the past, I know that they can at times be difficult and require a lot of dedication for them to work. So it was really cool to see a couple that was able to find love despite the distance between them.

They also chose an absolutely beautiful location for their wedding and reception. Tucked away in the rolling hills of McMinville, Youngberg Hills features a ton of scenery ideal for photos, including rows of grape vines, a makeshift swing hanging from a tall tree, a meadow surrounded by forest, and an idyllic guesthouse wrapped about with patios and balconies overlooking a wide swath of fertile land. Despite being threatened by a potential rainstorm on the horizon, we were treated to some golden sunrays that peaked through the clouds just as the newlyweds took to the dance floor.

Sometimes, with senior portraits,  it’s hard to choose.

For instance, with such a beautiful high school senior as Hailey, how do you choose which photos to share?  Instead, we’ll just share a smattering of the 60 images we’re showing to Hailey and her family.

Aside from being tall and beautiful, Hailey is also athletic–although she set aside volleyball this year to concentrate on her studies.  So, she’s beautiful and smart.

Here’s to a great senior year, Hailey, and a bright future!

Among the many reasons I love wedding photography is that I get to travel a lot, whether it be to a church in Portland, a golf course in Seattle, a beach in California or some far-flung location. But sometimes the wedding venues closest to home can be the most special.

In the case of Erin and Clark, they had their wedding at Clark’s parents’ house in the rural outskirts of Forest Grove. Located on a hill situated above wheat fields and a Christmas tree farm, their house provided a very intimate, meaningful place to be married. While it’s certainly a lot of work setting your home up for a ceremony and reception, there’s something special to be said for inviting all of your closest friends and family over for such an important day.

The ceremony itself was located in a shady alcove of trees where guests sat on hay bails and watched the bride and groom and their bridal party walk up a bark dust path lined with colorful flowers soaking in mason jars. Afterward, the reception was hosted in the driveway just below under a big white tent decorated with vintage typewriters, cameras, books, couches and signs.

All of the decorations were absolutely fabulous, but I’d have to say the standout element of the wedding, aside from the bride and groom themselves, were the comic book character bowties worn by Clark and his groomsmen. When I saw those I knew that this wedding was going to be a lot of fun.

Portland Engagement Portrait Photography

We spent the afternoon with Kirstin and Neal, photographing their engagement portraits in Washington Park, just below the Portland Rose Gardens.  This fun couple run their tanning salons together, and love working out.  Fitness is a common bond, so much so that they styled some shots in their workout clothes.  I love it when people bring this kind of personal touch to their portraits!

Kirstin and Neal are getting married on New Year’s Eve, at the Tigard Embassy Suites.  It should be a fun bash, combining Lebanese and American traditions, music, and family and friends.  We’re looking forward to it!

Rachael and Kevin are relatively new to Portland so when we started talking about engagement photos they asked if I’d throw out a few location suggestions. They were quite taken with the idea of shooting at Powell’s Bookstore and the Broadway Bridge. I’ve shot in both locations a number of times now, and although Powell’s is a ridiculously cool bookstore it for the most part honestly has pretty atrocious lighting. But if you know where to look there are a few sweet spots in the building where the windows cast the most beautifully soft light on the aisles that is great for portraits. As for the Broadway Bridge, it has always been one of my favorite places to shoot. It not only has excellent lines and shapes to play with but at sunset it looks absolutely gorgeous.

So far Rachael and Kevin’s engagement session is one of my favorites this year, especially because both of them were a joy to work with. In general, I had to give them very little direction because they acted so naturally and comfortably in front of the camera, which always makes my job a little bit easier. They were clearly very much in love. I’m really looking forward to taking more photos of them in August during their wedding at the Seattle Tennis Club.

Wedding party photo McMenamins Edgefield

McMenamins Edgefield wedding photographers love photographing wedding parties here!

The wedding photos in today’s blog post are the culmination of a love story long in the making, which began when Gabriela moved to New Mexico in the 5th grade and met Ben for the first time. Quickly smitten with Gabriela, Ben, along with his friends, used to follow Gabriela home from school and try to convince her to go out with him, After much persistence he was eventually successful when the two of them began dating their freshman year in high school. Since then they’ve been inseparable.

Aside from getting to spend the day with this lovely couple, my favorite part of their wedding was photographing a very special event during the reception. Ben’s parents led the newlyweds and all of their guests in the New Mexican tradition of La Marcha, a mini parade of sorts, around the meadow next to Blackberry Hall at McMenamin’s Edgefield. At the end of the march, the guests formed a giant tunnel that Ben and Gabriela ran through while everyone cheered and smiled. It was so much fun that quite frankly I think Oregonians should start making it a tradition at every wedding!

Let me first start by saying that I love outdoor weddings, and I especially love beach weddings. There are few things I can think of that are more romantic than getting married with waves crashing nearby on a warm, sunny day. So I was very excited for Emily and Mick’s wedding. It was held at Cannon Beach with Haystack Rock just a stone’s throw away, while their reception was held in a little meadow surrounded by trees and flowers behind a cute little house at Haystack Gardens a couple blocks down the road. One of the great things about their wedding is that they had the most wonderful decorations, and they made them entirely on their own. I can only imagine all of the time that went into them, but they did a wonderful job.

I also had a great time hanging out with the two of them after the wedding when I was off the clock. Mick was so kind as to treat me to a couple shots of whisky and we chatted about photography for a bit. This highlights one of the uniquely special things about my job. By nature, wedding photographers get to spend more time with the newlyweds than any other vendor, and because of that we have the opportunity to form a deep connection, if only for the day. I believe that every photographer should have this goal because it ultimately will produce better photographs, and it just makes the job so much more fun. In a way, being asked to join in is a sign of a job well done. It’s always a welcomed surprise and an honor because it truly shows their appreciation for the effort put into their wedding photographs.

Emily already wrote to us and said:
Hey Kyle,
I wanted to tell you thank you for everything you did at the wedding – you did an amazing job, and you were very patient with us, haha. We’re sooo happy we chose to go with you… Wow is all I can say. They are AMAZING. You have some serious talent. Thank you SO much, again!

Portland-Wedding-Photographers-FritzPhoto-8

Stefanie and Hoss are “boat people.”  It was so fun to be their wedding photographer!

Here are some things I loved most from their wedding:

  • I loved the classic, care-free American feel to their yacht club wedding.
  • Stefanie hand made most of the decorations.
  • They not only had a catered meal they also brought in a wood-fired pizza truck.
  • The evening was complete with the gift of an engraved bell for their boat.
