Location Portrait Demonstration at Mt Hood Community College

Portland Oregon Portrait and Model PhotographerA few months ago, the photography program at Mt Hood Community College invited me to come in and give a demonstration of my location photography work.  I was honored to be invited, and we’ve been planning it ever since (waiting for my return from Thailand and Nicaragua…).

Location portrait photography is a passion of mine, and I enjoy both the variety of locations, subjects, and lighting, but also the challenge of creating something great in an environment that is new every single time.

My assistant Amy and I arrived early, and walked the campus in search of suitable locations.  We had to venture away from the Soviet-bloc-inspired architecture of the school, into the natural environs surrounding the campus, to find some interesting texture and light.  With our two models, Cheryl and Brian, we took about 15 students out and I did a demonstration shoot.  We then headed back indoors to view the images on the big screen and talk over the process.  Here are a few favorites from the shoot.

robin - oh thanks. it looks like you have one on location lighting coming up in june! and i see you have just completed teaching your on location portrait class… i might be able to do the lighting one. is there an actual syllabus for that course or is it a little less formal due to time limitations?

    thanks!
